SAG-AFTRA Extends Duncan Crabtree-Ireland's Contract, Adds CEO Title

The union's national board voted 98.34% in favor of keeping its national executive director and chief negotiator through 2032, past the next round of studio talks.

SAG-AFTRA is keeping its top staff executive in place for years to come. The union's National Board voted Saturday to extend the contract of National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland through June 20, 2032, and to add chief executive officer to his title, Deadline and Variety reported.

His current deal had been due to run out on June 21, 2028. The board approved the extension in a weighted vote with 98.34% in favor. Financial terms were not disclosed, though Variety reported he was paid $1.1 million for the 2026 fiscal year.

Why the union moved now

The new title is meant to better capture the scope of a job that includes serving as the union's chief negotiator, according to Deadline. In a statement, the union said the extension would bring stability and continuity during a period of deep upheaval in the industry. It also carries Crabtree-Ireland past the expiration of the current studio contract in June 2030, meaning he will lead the next round of bargaining.

"Leading SAG-AFTRA's staff is the honor of my career, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to keep doing this work," Crabtree-Ireland said in the statement, adding that he intends to fight for members' control over their image, likeness and voice, and for fair pay.

SAG-AFTRA President Sean Astin said the union needs experienced leadership with a record of successful bargaining to take on huge global corporations, and called Crabtree-Ireland a powerful executive who has represented members in negotiations, in Congress and across the industry.

A long run at the union

Crabtree-Ireland has spent nearly his whole career at SAG-AFTRA, working as general counsel and chief operating officer before becoming national executive director in 2021, Variety reported. He was a central figure in the 2023 actors' strike, and in May he negotiated the union's new four-year agreement with the AMPTP, the producers' trade association.

The extension comes as the business faces fresh uncertainty around the Paramount Skydance acquisition of Warner Bros., a deal the union's leadership has opposed, according to Deadline.
