Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner went full archive for the season two premiere of Ryan Murphy's legal drama All's Fair at the Rome Film Festival on Saturday night, and Jenner brought one of Hollywood's most storied garments with her: the Scorpio Cape Elizabeth Taylor wore in 1969.
Jenner's black velvet hooded cape, lined in ivory silk that framed her face, carried embroidered scorpions across the chest. She paired it with a floor-length white gown and long white gloves, Vogue and WWD reported.
The cape's history
The design is a Tiziani Roma piece that Taylor wore to Princess Grace's famous Scorpio Ball on Nov. 15, 1969, a party marking Grace Kelly's 40th birthday and her star sign. Taylor, a Pisces, went with her husband Richard Burton, a Scorpio. Vogue noted that Karl Lagerfeld was freelancing for Tiziani at the time and that Christie's has suggested the cape may have been his work. The original sold at Christie's in 2011 for $74,500 as part of the auction of Taylor's personal collection.
Vogue wrote that it was unconfirmed whether Jenner had worn that very garment or a recreation. Kardashian appeared to settle the matter later that night on Instagram, writing that the cape had belonged to Taylor, that her mother now owns it and that Jenner had let her wear it on the show, WWD reported. Kardashian is seen in the cape, in character as divorce lawyer Allura Grant, in the season two trailer. The choice suits Jenner, a Scorpio with a Nov. 5 birthday.
Kardashian's leopard couture
Kardashian, working with her new stylist Law Roach, wore a leopard-print gown from Yves Saint Laurent's fall 1986 haute couture collection, sourced through vintage specialist Lily et Cie. The dress has a corseted sweetheart neckline with lace-up detailing at the front and a fitted mermaid shape that flares at the hem. She added a matching leopard stole, which she draped over her head for photos, echoing her mother's hood, and black pumps.
The evening fits a pattern. Kardashian wore Marilyn Monroe's actual 1962 "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" gown to the 2022 Met Gala, and Vogue notes the family's long fascination with Taylor, including a 1951 Balenciaga gown Kardashian wore at the Academy Museum Gala last week.
All's Fair, which also stars Naomi Watts, Niecy Nash-Betts and Sarah Paulson, debuted its second-season opener at the festival, with the full season due for general release in November, according to WWD.
