Amazing Red Wins Vacant TNA X-Division Title at Bound For Glory

Hours after his TNA Hall of Fame induction, Amazing Red entered a seven-man scramble as a surprise and pinned KC Navarro to become a four-time X-Division Champion.

Amazing Red went from the TNA Hall of Fame stage to the X-Division throne in a single night. At Bound For Glory, he entered the vacant X-Division Championship match as an unannounced participant, hit KC Navarro with the Code Red and took the pinfall, according to Ringside News, Fightful and Wrestling Inc.

The victory makes Red a four-time X-Division Champion. Ringside News reported that his previous reign ended on September 25, 2010, so the new title win arrives a little more than 16 years later.

How a six-way became a seven-way

The match was created because Leon Slater vacated the title. Ringside News reported that Slater gave it up by cashing in Option C to challenge Nic Nemeth for the TNA World Championship. Fightful added that Slater had regained the X-Division belt at TNA Lockdown before invoking the option.

A six-person scramble was originally set for Bound For Glory. During his Hall of Fame speech, Red announced he was joining it. That brought the field to seven: Red, BDE, Cedric Alexander, Fabian Aichner, Navarro, Rich Swann and Ryan Nemeth. Ringside News listed it as the second match of the night.

How the match played out

Wrestling Inc. described a chaotic opening in which Nemeth tried to shake hands with the whole field and was answered with a superkick from Navarro. Several competitors were sent to the floor, leaving Alexander and Swann to trade offense, including a pair of hurricanranas, a German suplex and a double stomp from Alexander.

Aichner then lifted BDE and Swann onto his shoulders for a double slam and followed with a moonsault on BDE. Red kicked Aichner, Alexander and BDE in turn, and BDE replied with a springboard crossbody and a codebreaker. Later, Aichner dropped Red and Alexander with brainbusters, and he caught BDE in mid-dive and slammed him to the floor.

Navarro hit Aichner with a Blessing In Disguise, but Nemeth dragged the referee out of the ring before a count could start. Navarro answered by taking Nemeth down with a dive. Back inside, Red landed a big boot on Navarro and tried for a Code Red from the top turnbuckle. Navarro escaped, but the two met again and came down together in a Spanish Fly. Red then connected with the Code Red for the win, per Wrestling Inc.

Why it matters

The timing gives the win its shape. Wrestling Inc. put the gap between induction and title at roughly an hour, while Ringside News said only that it came hours later. Either way, the sources agree on the arc: a Hall of Fame honor that might have capped a career instead became the lead-in to a new championship run.

For the X-Division, it puts the title on a veteran at a moment when the division's top spot had just been left open by Slater's move toward the World Championship. The sources do not say what comes next for Red's reign, including who might challenge him.
