Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, according to an exclusive from Deadline. The movie draws on the action-adventure role-playing game from CD Projekt Red.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to produce. Deadline reported that he will work alongside CD Projekt Red, which developed the game and holds the franchise rights. The outlet's report gave no word on a director, writer, cast or release date.

The Game Behind the Film

Per Deadline, the game takes place in Night City, a fictional cyberpunk metropolis, within a dystopian universe. Players follow V, a mercenary who is reluctantly fitted with a cybernetic biochip. The chip holds an engram of Johnny Silverhand, described as a legendary rockstar and terrorist.

As Silverhand's consciousness starts to overwrite V's, the two have to cooperate to pull apart and save V's life. That means confronting the Arasaka Corporation, a megacorporation that Deadline describes as the city's de facto ruler.

Built-In Audience

Deadline put sales of Cyberpunk 2077 at more than 40 million copies worldwide. Its expansion, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, has sold 15 million copies.

Paramount's Game Slate

The studio has other video game projects in motion, Deadline noted. Among them is a Street Fighter adaptation that Paramount is co-producing with Legendary, due October 16. Paramount also has a film based on the Call of Duty games, with Peter Berg directing and co-writing the script with Taylor Sheridan.

Cyberpunk 2077 joins that group, which shows Paramount putting several game properties into development at the same time.
