Paramount is developing a film based on Pierce Brown's Red Rising, with Francis Lawrence attached to direct the adaptation. The project draws from the opening novel in Brown's science-fiction series, and Justin Rhodes has been selected to write the screenplay. Deadline, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the rights agreement and the principal creative team.

Lawrence brings experience translating large-scale dystopian fiction to the screen through the Hunger Games films. His involvement signals the intended scale of the project, but the reports do not provide a cast, a production start or a theatrical release date. The development deal is an early step rather than evidence that filming has begun.

A Story Built Around Class and Rebellion

Brown's narrative follows Darrow, a miner belonging to an oppressed social class called the Reds. The wider society is organized through a hierarchy marked by colors, with the Gold caste holding power over people whose labor supports the system. After learning more about the structure governing his life, Darrow assumes a new identity to work inside the ruling order.

That premise gives the adaptation a central conflict that goes beyond a conventional uprising. Darrow's transformation requires him to move within the world he wants to overturn, confronting the privileges and expectations attached to its dominant class. Variety described his entry into a demanding school that prepares members of the elite for power.

The first book appeared in 2014. Six installments of the saga have been published, with a seventh, Red God, planned. The Hollywood Reporter also noted that the property had previously been considered for film and television development, so Paramount's deal follows an extended effort to translate the series to a different medium.

Who Is Making the Film

Rhodes has credits on Terminator: Dark Fate and Secret Level and previously worked with Lawrence on developing a BioShock adaptation, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Lawrence and Cameron MacConomy will produce through their about:blank banner, with Francesco Goedhuis also producing. Brown is participating as an executive producer.

The studio has several book adaptations on its slate, but those separate projects do not establish a timetable for Red Rising. Lawrence is also linked to The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, another installment in the franchise that helped define his work as a director.

For readers of Brown's novels, the meaningful confirmation is that the rights and lead filmmakers are now in place. Questions about Darrow's casting, the treatment of the books' elaborate social system and the film's eventual schedule remain unanswered by the current reporting.
