Walter Koenig, who created the role of Ensign Pavel Chekov on the original Star Trek and carried it through seven feature films, has died at 90, his representative said. Zachery McGinnis of Galactic Productions wrote on Facebook on Monday that Koenig died of natural causes at home, with his daughter and niece at his side, Deadline reported.

His death leaves George Takei and William Shatner as the last surviving members of the original series' main cast, and it comes as the show created by Gene Roddenberry marks its 60th anniversary.

The navigator

Koenig joined Star Trek in its second season in 1967, playing the Russian-American navigator at the height of the Cold War. With his heavy accent and moptop, Chekov embodied Roddenberry's vision of a future in which old rivalries had given way to exploration, IndieWire noted. He appeared in 36 episodes through 1969.

The show was no ratings hit at first, but syndication in the 1970s turned it into one of the most popular properties in television history. Koenig returned for Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979 and every original-cast sequel that followed, including a pivotal turn in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, where Chekov's scouting mission ends with Khan free and in command of a ship. He also appeared in 1994's Star Trek Generations and, decades later, voiced an older Chekov in Star Trek: Picard in 2023.

Beyond the bridge

Born Sept. 14, 1936, Koenig worked briefly as a dancer before acting, guesting on Combat!, The Untouchables, Ben Casey, I Spy and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, and appearing in the 1963 pilot of what became General Hospital. He later recurred as Psi Corps officer Alfred Bester in a dozen episodes of Babylon 5, wrote for Land of the Lost and Family, published several memoirs and was a fixture at Star Trek conventions. This year he won a Platinum Award for Best Actor at the Independent Shorts Awards for the short film Mr. Fleischmann.

Takei, who played Sulu, wrote that the two had been friends for nearly six decades and that Koenig was the best man when Takei married his husband, Brad, in 2008. "Walter was more than Chekov," Takei wrote, describing him as a writer, teacher and loyal friend.

Information about a memorial service was not immediately available.
